Wonder Woman: The Story of a Candle
When you are a small company looking to expand, you often dream of working with your favorite brands. And that’s exactly what happened when we teamed up with OwlCrate.
We were looking up companies we’d like to partner with one night, over ice pops and a season 4 episode of The Office on Netflix (you know the nights, when you just want to watch something familiar and relax, and let’s be honest – The Office, it just doesn’t get old). Finding companies that fit your brand, your values, and general interests is hard. For us: business is really personal, and we are always looking for people to whom we can relate.
We were almost ready to call it a night, my eyes growing heavy, when my boyfriend said “Tash. I found them. You gotta read their bio.”
“Can it wait til tomorrow? I really just want to go to sleep, babe” I replied.
“No, you HAVE to read this, tonight. I got a feeling” his exuberance was palpable.
So I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and headed over to the computer. “OwlCrate? They are HUGE. What makes you think they’re going to work with us?”
And so I did. I read all about OwlCrate. I read about Korrina and her boyfriend, Robert, and how they started their business is a basement suite. Their story was real, their writing style - personal. We felt we could relate to these strangers to the north, with their dreams of sharing what they love with the world. We started making candles in a 600 square foot apartment in NJ, and followed our hearts to Denver in June 2016 where we started Dio Candle Company – the birthplace of the Adorable Size Candle®.
The next day we wrote our email, highlighting our similar stories and expressing interest in a potential partnership. We went about our day as usual, fulfilling orders, taking Luna to the dog park and cooking dinner together, followed by the season 4 finale of The Office.
A few days passed when we received their reply. They were following us on Instagram already and had seen us around. *FANGIRL MOMENT SO HARD* And best of all, they were interested in working with us too. We had worked with other subscription boxes before, but nothing could have prepared us for the demand of this magnitude. We worked long days for weeks on end to fulfill this order, because – we wanted in on Wonder Woman.
This idea was proposed by Korrina (everything about this candle is an OwlCrate exclusive design), and we went WILD. Personally, I had been raised on super heroes. I have three brothers, so Barbie dolls just didn’t cut it in my house growing up. I loved playing with G.I. Joes and Tonka Trucks, Lincoln Logs and Matchbox Cars. I was the only girl in town with my very own X-men bed sheets. #WolverineForever
Every Saturday morning, I would wake up early to watch cartoons with my dad (the comic book guru. If you ever meet him, he will no doubt tell you about the time his mom threw out all his original first edition comics when he joined the Marines in 1967, and also how we would have been millionaires now had she not thrown out said comics). These moments as a kid (when your dad was working nights to provide for his family) are paramount. And so comic books and super heroes, - they’re just in my blood. They are a part of the fabric that shaped my entire life. To have the opportunity to pay homage to something so personal, we just had to jump at it.
We ended up sending a few different samples to OwlCrate to test out, so for everyone who fell in love with the Wonder Woman scent, thank Korrina. She made the final call on which scent to use. And we were ecstatic! The fruit punch scent was our newest concoction and we hadn’t put it up for sale yet. All things were falling into place to make this candle an OwlCrate exclusive! We went back and forth designing the label together, of which we could not be prouder. Seeing the label in all it’s glory across the Instagram world is an indescribable feeling.
Thank you to everyone who shared their pictures, and a special thanks to all of you who have reached out to express your undying love for this candle. All of your positivity, support and admiration has made us feel like a million bucks. We love the love.
P.S. You’ll have to ask OwlCrate
when they’re releasing Wonder Woman for the world to enjoy. 😉
P.P.S. We just went to see Wonder Woman in the Theater on our One-Year Anniversary of moving to Denver (June 6th, 2017). It’s AMAZING, and was executed beyond my wildest dreams or expectations. #GirlPower
